Have I mentioned I love our new house? Well, I do, every day since we moved in I have taken a moment or two to acknowledge how grateful I am that this beauty is finally ours. There are so many things to love about it, the abundance of light that streams through the big windows, the space big enough for our not so little family and all the stuff that comes with that, the close proximity to the kids’ school and their friends (and our friends). One thing I don’t love about it is the huge amount of debt we are now in. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s totally worth every penny, I just don’t love the stress that comes with such a big mortgage, especially having an all too fresh knowledge of just how messed up things can get when life doesn’t go your way. Financial stress is definitely no picnic, my friends.
So, with a brand-new mortgage and a promise to never be in that situation again, I started looking into ways to make our family a little more financially secure, should the poo hit the proverbial fan again per se.

I wrote down a list of all our monthly expenses and started looking into ways to get them down. Some things I couldn’t change, like the kids’ extracurricular activities, are pretty much a set price, and I’m not prepared to drop them because I think they are important. Some things though, I was pleasantly surprised could be reduced; like when I found out I could get my dogs food delivered for less than what I was paying to go out and pick it up!
// You didn’t think I was actually going to share my numbers with you, did you? 😉
I looked at our phone plans and managed to reduce mine quite significantly, canceled a few things I no longer needed and then I came to the utilities. I almost just skipped over them thinking there was no way I could reduce them. Remember, I have three kids under 6, trying to be conservative with usage is next to impossible for us. Then I remembered all the times I’ve walked through the shopping centers and been hassled by those guys trying to get me to switch over my natural gas. Switch over my gas… I didn’t even realise what I was saying no to! If I can switch insurance companies to get a cheaper price, then the same is probably true for gas. Boy did I feel like a dummy, walking past those guys all those times with a polite ‘no’ and a nervous ‘please-don’t-make-me-stop-and-talk-to-you’ smile, and if I’d just thought about it for one minute I would have realised I could have actually saved money. Duh!
So I did a little research and discovered that there are now a few natural gas providers in Perth and they are fighting for our business yo! There are discounts to be had and I am taking full advantage. I went with Origin Energy and am now getting 35% off my usage charges, which is not to be sneezed at (better in my pocket, than theirs amirite?!) I have to say, after this little revelation, I felt like I was actually getting this whole adulting business down.
// Adulting. Like a boss.
If you’re thinking ‘yeah, but it’s not worth the hassle of switching’ let me tell you how wrong you are. All it takes is a quick phone call to Origin, or you can jump online, and you’re switched in a matter of minutes. They even sort out the disconnection with your old provider. Simples

// With savings like these, I can cook as many delicious dinners as my heart desires. Haha! Just kidding, I don’t cook. Lucky I have an amazing husband who cooks us amazing meals like this delightful pumpkin soup. He’s a keeper.
// Look how pretty my new shower is. I like my showers super long and crazy hot; so hot I come out bright red, looking like a giant beet. I was a little devastated when I found out that a huge chunk of your monthly utilities charges come from the gas it takes to provide this little slice of heaven on earth.
// My new happy place, and now it won’t cost me a fortune to fill this baby with gloriously hot water.
